Growing our great sport - Junior Participation and Performance – heading towards 2025
The purpose of this Expression of Interest is to call for nominations for passionate individuals to be involved in a Junior Participation and Performance Working Group.
In recent years, there have been many changes in the community resulting in challenges in retaining and recruiting players across all sports. Hockey is no different.
Hockey is competing with cricket, netball, soccer and football. The Australian Sports Commission from 2017 found that soccer and AFL were the 2 team sports building a monopoly in junior sport.
In addition to competing with other sports, cost is also a factor. While hockey is an inexpensive sport at a junior level in Tasmania, retaining players past their junior years becomes a challenge with hockey being a relatively expensive sport once over the age of 18. There is also the increasing challenge with engaging young people away from their ipads, iphones, online games etc.
Each region within Tasmania also has their own individual challenges in regard to collaboration with schools, securing quality volunteers including coaches, travel distances etc.
However, it’s not all bad news. We also have some great advantages being a small state that we need to build upon. We have fantastic facilities across the state with water based turfs in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, Burnie and Smithton. We’ve had some very positive outcomes at junior national tournaments over the past 24 months potentially the result of significant investment in our children in JETs programs across the state, providing incentives for those new to the sport to grow their skills and aspire to a higher level. We have many passionate hockey volunteers who are prepared to support our children and make a difference. The work underway on building a media profile is paying off with some great stories in newspapers and on social media about our sport.
We need to build on these advantages and work together across the state towards a common goal. If we don’t address our challenges we will most like see a continual decline in participation at both junior and senior level. It’s time to do something about it.
If you are a passionate individual who is keen to see our junior participation rates increase; our junior (and therefore senior) performance to continue to improve; and for us to maintain our participation rates as juniors move through to senior grades please put your hand forward to be involved in the Junior Participation and Performance Working Group.
